Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a devastating traumatic event. It is a damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of functions such as movement and sensation below the level of injury. The process of adjustment is often an arduous and challenging one. After the initial discharge from hospital, the experience of adapting to home and community living may be especially difficult.

The Society for the Physically Disabled and the Tetraplegia Workgroup with support from MCYS have jointly produced a public education brochure - Spinal Cord Injury: "Re-integration, Let's Make It Happen". The brochure provides information on surviving spinal cord injury after the initial transition from hospital and to the community.

The brochure was launched by Prof K Satkunanantham, Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, during the Spinal Cord Injury workshop of the same title held on 26 February 2005 at The Society for the Physically Disabled. That event was also a collaboration between The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and Tetraplegia Workgroup.

There is hope for spinal cord injury survivors. With continued rehabilitation and a positive approach towards life, it is possible to lead a healthy, active and happy life after the injury.
